Yesterday me and two other guys did the 72 mile shorter version of the civil war century. It was a great ride and some great scenery. The hill of Rt. 491 was a terror 4-5 miles of a 6% grade or so and the last few miles home in traffic wasn't great but overall I did real well. No cramps or getting too tired which was what I was hoping for. I figured this was about 1/2 the effort its going to take to complete the SM100. I had gas in the tank, but not sure about still having 1/2 a tank left. I guess some of the SM100 will be all about how you do with no gas left. About 5 hours of ride time although we were on the road for 6 hours and change.
Things I learned:
1. Bike computers wheel magnets are not all the same. I found I had 2 on my bike on Saturday night and I took one off. Oops, wrong one.
2. GPS doesn't work w/o batteries.
3. Following a cue sheet w/o any mileage idea can be frustrating.
4. Long hills will make you talk to yourself. :)

Any idea on why you think 72 road miles will = 1/2 SM100? Just curious. I am road training for the race on Skyline Dr. in VA as I live 5 minutes away from the Front Royal entrance. Last Monday I rode 102 miles in 10.5 total hours and I still do not know how that stacks against the SM100. I am sure it will be harder than 100 road miles. Maybe if I do 125?
Just a guess... its about 1/2 the elevation gain and time wise its about 1/2 the time it should take. That or I'm deluding myself. :) Nothing scientific about it at all.
